NTT And ST Develop New Chip
NTT Electronics and STMicroelectronics have announced a new smart power chip that simplifies precise control of fiber communication lasers. Inside the new chip are circuits that provide all the analog functions to implement closed-loop control of laser temperature, laser optical power, and laser pre-bias current. A microprocessor sets the references for these loops through a serial port. The wavelength of the laser can be preset and maintained more precisely, reducing the spacing necessary between wavelengths in DWDM applications. Called Advanced Laser Diode Controller, the architecture is designed by NTT and the chip is produced by ST using the company’s proprietary bipolar-CMOS-DMOS (BCD) smart power technology, which allows the integration of complex control functions and high current drive circuits on the same piece of silicon.

ClearCube Announces USB C/Port
ClearCube Technology has announced the USB C/Port, offering complete USB functionality to the desktop from the CPU Blade, a computer that can be located up to 200 meters away in a data center. The USB C/Port delivers four USB ports to the desktop while giving IT managers control over what devices can be connected for security. Standard USB-compliant devices connect to the C/Port’s four ports, including keyboards, mice, audio and video devices, and mass storage. A standard VGA port supports CRT and LCD monitors. Security is not sacrificed since peripherals are managed through both an operating system policy and a unique hardware lock that can prevent desktop connection to any mass storage media. The hardware lock is configured via a jumper on the centralized CPU Blade. The USB C/Port augments the ClearCube C3 Architecture, a managed solution that enables security and uptime advantages with the performance and user experience of a managed PC. This approach centralizes computing assets into the data center and delivers the full PC functionality to the desktop over standard Category 5 cable up to 200 meters away.

CML Versatel Announces Resource Calculator
CML Versatel has announced the general availability of a resource calculator for analyzing CTI server efficiency. Using a table format, it compares the cost of a high-density TDM front-end solution with a traditional CTI server approach of one DSP resource per T1 interface, given a user’s specifications. “We used the resource calculator to analyze what a typical Pronexus customer could save by implementing CML Versatel’s TotalAgility Platform,” said Andrew Kozminski, director of development at Pronexus. “We found that the platform is very attractive for high-density carrier-grade applications and that there are some significant cost savings that companies can realize by using CML Versatel’s platform.”
