Gemalto (News - Alert) has collaborated with LG to deliver Smart Card Web Server compatible handsets.

Developed by the SIM industry, the Smart Card Web Server (SCWS) provides operators with a rich and portable environment to develop Multimedia SIM-based applications, and enhance the presentation and usability of their services.

The Smart Card Web server is based on a tiny web server embedded in the SIM. Making the most of the handset embedded browser, the solution displays rich content and applications. In addition, the SCWS powers new applications such as data synchronization between the SIM and the handset, or personalization and customization of the handset environment from the SIM.

Both the companies are working with LG to implement the BIP TCP1 server mode into LG handsets. This will enable communication between the LG handsets and Smart Card Web Server. Gemalto explains that this standardized channel between the handset and the SIM is paving the way to a new kind of collaboration between the two devices that will benefit the whole mobile eco-system.

Jean-François Deprun from LG said in a statement that their company sees the benefit of SCWS compatible handsets as a compelling solution to offer to both operators and end-users a flexible and convenient environment for services and applications in line with their latest innovations for handsets and features. Deprun noted that Gemalto is clearly leading the way to develop this new eco-system and expressed his company’s delight to participate in this initiative.

Philippe Vallée, executive vice resident, Telecom, Gemalto observed that this cooperation between Gemalto and LG is a milestone, and shows that SIM-based SCWS technology is clearly in the handset manufacturers product roadmaps.

“We are pleased to deploy this important technology with an innovative partner like LG,” added Vallée.
