Cystic Fibrosis Knowledge Centre Launched on EPG Online Website for Doctors

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM, Jun 11, 2009 (Marketwire via COMTEX) -- EPG Health Media, specialists in e-communication solutions and digital publishing for the health sector, today announced the launch of a new interactive cystic fibrosis knowledge centre on www.epgonline.org, its web-based medical education resource for Healthcare Professionals (HCPs).

The launch of the cystic fibrosis knowledge centre is to coincide with the 32nd European Cystic Fibrosis Conference, which takes place this year 10th-13th June in Brest, France. The event will bring together the best of European and international experts in cystic fibrosis and will in 2009 celebrate the 20th anniversary of the discovery of the cystic fibrosis gene.

Cystic Fibrosis is one of the more common, life-shortening, inherited diseases among Caucasians and affects about 70,000 people worldwide.(1) Research and better treatment of lung infections and other conditions mean that patients with cystic fibrosis live to a median age of nearly 37 years based on 2005 data.(2) However, while disease management and prognosis for patients has improved over the past 50 years, it is still a progressive disease with no cure and results in early death.

Because cystic fibrosis is a multisystem disease, treatment must be multidisciplinary, with a team of healthcare professionals providing comprehensive management of the patient. The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF) accredits a network of CF centers where patients are regularly monitored by teams including pulmonologists, gastroenterologists, nurses, respiratory therapists, dietitians, psychologists, and social workers.(3) The EPG cystic fibrosis knowledge centre is designed to provide information and support to the wide range of health professionals involved in the treatment and care of cystic fibrosis sufferers through all stages of the disease. Detailed information is provided on management of the lung, through various therapies and approaches, as well as the digestive system, liver and gall bladder and pancreas.

The new cystic fibrosis knowledge centre is the latest addition to the EPG Online 'library' of more than twenty knowledge centres. Other disease knowledge centres focus on a range of chronic and acute conditions including asthma, renal anaemia, migraine, diabetes, thrombosis and various types of cancer. To access the knowledge centres, healthcare professionals will be required to register (for free) or login with their EPG username and password.

In addition to disease knowledge centres, EPG Online includes a database of drugs (searchable by name and indication), clinical trials, guideline information and original medical news articles. Established in 2000, it is an independent website, dedicated to providing HCP's with access to the most recent best practice diagnosis and patient management guidance.
