By Carolyn J Dawson, TMCnet Contributor

Strategy Analytics (News - Alert) Inc. reported that the total number of broadband subscriptions worldwide will be close to 1 billion by 2015. The report also stated that the major subscription growth in the coming five years will be seen in the Asia-Pacific region with a compound annual growth rate of nearly 18 percent. The Asia-Pacific region is currently responsible for almost 45 percent of the total broadband subscription.

Ben Piper who is the author of the report and Director of the Strategy Analytics Multiplay Market Dynamics service said that “While broadband growth has been impressive, it is important to note that in 2010 more than 60 percent of households worldwide have no access to the Internet—much less broadband.”

In the recent years, Broadband technology has attained a robust growth with xDSL being the dominant access platform. Although there are several types of broadband connection available such as xDSL, Cable, Satellite and Wireless, however over the next five years fiber optic connections are likely to dominate the future. Fiber optic broadband service would provide unbelievable high speed internet access with improved productivity and communication capability. As per the report, around one quarter of broadband connections would be via fiber by 2015. Although the average revenue per user will decline slightly, the service revenues are bound to grow nearly 9 percent over the forecast period.

The report, Global Broadband Forecast: 1H’10, which covers seven discrete regions provides history and five year forecast for key metrics that includes factors such as Households, Household Internet Access Penetration, Household Broadband Access Penetration, PC Penetration, Internet Access Subscriptions, Broadband Subscriptions, Broadband Users, Dial-up vs. Broadband splits, Service Revenues, ARPU and Subscriptions by Technology Platform.
