Dialing Area Code for Local Calls is Mandatory for Connecticut Residents

By Calvin Azuri, TMCnet Contributor

The Connecticut Department of Public Utility Control has reportedly ordered the implementation of the 203/475 area-code "overlay" to ensure a continuing supply of telephone numbers in the state. So, Verizon Wireless customers within the 203 area code must begin dialing the area code plus the seven-digit number for all local calls.

In addition, the agency implemented a statewide mandatory 10-digit dialing plan. Callers must now use the new dialing procedure when placing a local call in Connecticut. If callers forget and dial only the seven-digit telephone number, the call will not be completed. Instead, a recording will instruct the caller to hang up and dial again.

An overlay is the addition of another area code. In the case of Connecticut, area code 475 is being added to the same geographic region as an existing area code. There is no need for customers to change their existing area code or phone number during an overlay. However, when two area codes serve the same region, callers will have to change the way they dial local calls. Under the new procedure, callers have to dial the area code first and then the seven-digit telephone number. This includes all calls that are currently dialed with just seven digits.

Starting Dec. 12, Connecticut customers who are currently being served by the 203 area code and have requested a new telephone service, or add a phone line or even move within the state, may receive the new 475 area code. According to John F. Butler, external affairs manager at Verizon (News - Alert) Wireless, it is important for all customers to begin thinking of their telephone number as a 10-digit number when providing it to family and friends.

A local call today will continue to be a local call even after the new area code is introduced. In addition, the price of a call, coverage area or other rates and services will not change. Callers will still be able to dial just three digits to reach 911.

Verizon is urging customers to reprogram their telecommunications services and equipment to use the new 10-digit dialing procedure. This includes telephones, speed dialing programs, modems, fax machines, automatic dialers, life safety systems, Internet dial-up numbers, alarm and security systems, gates, mobile phone contact lists, call-forwarding settings and voice mail services.
