By Shamila Janakiraman, TMCnet Contributor
Verizon (News - Alert) Wireless reportedly announced that its enhanced services will be available in ski resorts and popular mountain communities. This will enable skiers and snowboarders to optimize their time while on a trip to the mountain slopes.
Verizon Wireless service will allow them to check in with family, connect with friends and also get latest snow reports or make dinner reservations from the lodge or lift. Network engineers from the company strive to improve the service offerings by increasing coverage and capacity of the national network besides adding new services.
Recent enhancements made to the network and installation of new cell sites have increased coverage at remote locations like ski resorts, said company sources.
Some of the ski resorts which will come under the increased Verizon Wireless coverage include Wolf Creek Ski Area in Colorado with a newly activated cell site in Creede, Aspen Ski Resort in Colorado, where EV-DO coverage has been enhanced, Ski Roundtop in Pennsylvania, with a new cell site in Lewisberry and
Sugarloaf Mountain Resort in Maine, with a new cell site in Carrabassett among several others.
The enhanced voice quality in the resort areas actually ensures better safety for customers as was proved in the case of the rescue of two vacationers in Colorado. The Verizon Wireless’s new cell sites enhance voice capacity and also improve and expand the company’s 3G coverage.
Verizon sources said that customers will be able to use their wireless phones and other devices to browse the Web aided by faster page loading times and quick downloads. They can play music, send e-mails with attachments, watch streaming video and share files easily and download and play 3 D games while traveling.
The new network upgrades enables Verizon to expand its coverage, increase the network capacity and enhance the quality of its wireless voice and data network. The company has invested over $ 50 billion to improve connectivity across the United States since it was formed in 2000.
Last year alone, Verizon has spent $ 6.5 billion to expand and advance its network. New Jersey-based Verizon operates a large wireless voice and 3G data network serving 89 million customers.
