First & Only Jitter Analysis Solution on 10GE SyncE Devices

By Mini Swamy, TMCnet Contributor

JDSU, a provider of communications test and measurement solutions and optical products, realizing the importance of synchronization for high-quality, reliable network performance, has introduced a new jitter feature for its Optical Network Tester Series, ONT-503, 506, and 512.

The unique feature of the tester series is that it is the first and only jitter analysis solution able to conduct both jitter and wander measurements on 10GE Synchronous Ethernet devices and systems.

This means that it possible to ensure a reliable signal and network performance of mobile backhaul networks. The end result is there for all to see, a high-quality viewing experience.

Lars Friedrich, vice president and general manager, JDSU's (News - Alert) Communications Test and Measurement business segment, said that regardless of location or the kind of viewing device used, consumers have a tremendous appetite for high-quality experience.

In deference to users needs, Friedrich said, network equipment manufacturers and service providers had been provided with capabilities to address the jitter and wander functions over 10GE synchronous Ethernet Networks. This helped to eliminate signal degradation or network performance problems.

Ethernet, while successful in delivering a cost efficient technology for high-bandwidth data and video services, is lacking in synchronization features critical for ensuring reliable video and mobile backhaul networks.

SyncE has emerged as a simple link-by-link replacement for SONET/SDH that retains backward compatibility, leverages the existing synchronization architecture, and cost-effectively enables current and next-generation services such as IP-based video services.

And, the most important thing is that it promises to take care of future 40GE and 100 GE networks also, accelerating the transition from TDM to packet technology.

JDSU is also actively working in International Telecommunication Union Telecommunication study groups to standardize different aspects of SyncE jitter and wander testing. The JDSU ONT jitter module is compliant with the performance requirements for SyncE interfaces recently defined by ITU.

The company currently is capable of performing the three most common jitter measurements: jitter generation, jitter tolerance, and jitter transfer, which will greatly help in determining the amount of jitter acceptable at SyncE interfaces.

The JDSU jitter module supports the research and development, system verification, and production of component vendors and network equipment manufacturers, as well as the equipment verification, installation and maintenance requirements of service providers.

JDSU is also a leading provider of innovative optical solutions for medical/environmental instrumentation,

semiconductor processing, display, brand authentication, aerospace and defense, and decorative applications.

In a related news release, JDSU introduced the first field-portable solution for “one-way delay” testing. This new feature helps to measure and troubleshoot service delay in networks that carry real-time voice, video and data services in Ethernet backhaul applications, as well as services in government and financial networks.
